Third Coast Underwriters and Chicago Debate Commission Partner To Bring Top Chicago High School Debate Teams to Two 2016 Tournaments

December 16, 2015

Third Coast Underwriters (3CU), a Chicago-based workers’ compensation insurance provider, has committed a $20,000 donation to the Chicago Debate Commission (CDC) in support of two major Chicago high school debate tournaments in 2016, including the Local Circuit Conference (LCC) Championships in February. The donation represents 3CU’s strong commitment to partnering with the CDC as it works with Chicago students to advance their learning and prepare for college and careers through rigorous debate activities.

“We are thrilled to sponsor these worthwhile events in 2016,” said Marguerite Dixen, president of Third Coast Underwriters. “There is no question that policy debate in high school contributes to individual success in business, developing important decision-making, analytical and leadership skills that students will use in their future careers. We are excited to partner with the Chicago Debate Commission as it works with Chicago students participating in the Chicago Debate League.”

The Third Coast Underwriters LCC Conference Championship will take place on February 19-20, 2016 at Lindblom Math & Science Academy.

“On behalf of the Board and staff of the Chicago Debate Commission, many thanks to Third Coast Underwriters for becoming our newest partner in supporting success for Chicago students through debate,” said Edie Canter, executive director, Chicago Debate Commission. “We are excited and grateful for this wonderful partnership.”

The Chicago Debate Commission (CDC) was founded in 1995 to advance the academic achievement, life success and community contributions of urban youth by providing them with powerful skills in reading, research, critical thinking, civic engagement, teamwork and communications – all through the mechanism of academic debate. In 1997, in partnership with Chicago Public Schools, the CDC launched debate in Chicago with five high schools and 35 students. Now, the program has grown to 72 schools with 1,400 students. It is the largest program of its kind in the country and a model for urban debate leagues nationwide.
