A Message from 3CU Vice President Justin Bealhen
Hello 3CU Agency Partners,
I am honored to introduce myself as Third Coast Underwriters’ vice president of Business Development. I stepped into this new role earlier this year as Mike Valiante, my friend and colleague, accepted the position of vice president of Business Development and Operations for our sister brand, Accident Fund. I look forward to working closely with Mike in his new role.
I’ve been in the industry since 2000 and have led the United Heartland Business Development, Agency Management and Risk Management Services teams since 2015 – and will continue to serve as vice president of Business Development for UH in addition to 3CU. I’m excited to get to know more about you in the months ahead, meanwhile, I encourage you to reach out with any immediate needs!
Now, to get down to business. So far, we’re off to a great start! I anticipate we’ll maintain our top line equity through June. We are amped and ready to roll for July, our most impactful month of the year. Here are a few quick year-to-date performance highlights:
- YTD (through April): Up $4 million relative to plan
- YTD New Business: Up $5 million ahead of plan at $13 million driving our top line success
- YTD Retention: Slightly below plan at 74% mainly due to economic forces and intense competition in the construction and transportation segments
- YTD Net Rate: +3% which is right at plan and consistent with the overall industry
I’d like to take this opportunity to say ‘thank you’ from the entire 3CU team. 2020 challenged us in ways we never expected – both personally and professionally … but you were there, and continue to be there, for us and our mutual customers every step of the way. We appreciate you and look forward to a mutually successful year!
Until next time.
Justin

AF Group Subrogation
Earlier this year, AF Group Subrogation entered into a partnership with Optum – an external subrogation vendor. Working for our Subrogation Unit, Optum will handle low value and low probability of recovery subrogation claims for our workers’ compensation brands (Accident Fund, CompWest, Third Coast Underwriters and United Heartland).
Optum has also started performing ‘second look’ examinations on closed files to identify missed subrogation opportunities for our insureds. In the event you receive questions from your AF Group customers regarding inquiries on closed claim files, please assure them that calls from Optum are not fraudulent and are related to potential subrogation recoveries. In the meantime, we would encourage you to share this with your AF Group policyholders and direct any questions to AF Group Subrogation Manager, Kim Drew at 517-708-5647.
Secure Customer Portal
Last summer, we deployed new secure customer portals that offer improved tools and navigation. The enhancements were made to enrich and simplify the user experience, which helps us provide a premier customer experience to our agents, policyholders and injured workers.
